About Joanne Kinslor

Joanne Kinslor is amongst Australia’s foremost immigration lawyers. She is known for both her extensive experience throughout the field of immigration law and her thought leadership. Her clients appreciate her dedication to addressing complex immigration issues and winning difficult cases.

Joanne has been recognised as amongst Australia’s finest immigration lawyers through her inclusion in the peer reviewed Best Lawyers – Australia, Immigration Law, since 2008. In 2017 she was voted Lawyer of the Year, Immigration – Sydney.

Joanne has been accredited as an immigration specialist by the Law Society of New South Wales since 2006. There are fewer than 60 accredited immigration solicitors in New South Wales.

Joanne is an active member of the Law Council of Australia’s Migration Law Committee. Through the Law Council, she participates in national debate on immigration law and policy and contributes to Parliamentary submissions. Joanne has represented the Law Council before at the Australian Parliament. Joanne is also a member of the Law Council’s Administrative Review Tribunal Liaison Committee, where she engages in on-going dialogue with the Tribunal on behalf of the legal profession. Joanne served on the Law Council’s Federal Administrative Law Reform Working Group, which examined the law legislation leading to the establishment of the Administrative Review Tribunal in 2024.

Joanne has a long-standing commitment to contributing to the professional development of lawyers practicing immigration law. For several years she provided high level immigration law analysis for lawyers through the Immigration Law Review periodical and seminar series. She is also a well-known presenter for the Law Council of Australia on immigration law topics.

Joanne has worked as Associate Professor and sessional lecturer in the Law Faculty of the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Her teaching subjects were Australian Immigration Law and Practice and Administrative Law. Joanne also taught the Australian National University (ANU)’s Graduate Certificate of Migration Law and Practice course.

Joanne is an affiliate member of the Andrew and Renata Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law. Joanne is also past President of the Management Committee of the Refugee Advice and Casework Service (RACS), a legal centre which provides pro bono advice and assistance to asylum seekers in Australia. For several years Joanne was a Member of the Human Rights Committee of the Law Society of New South Wales.

Joanne graduated from The University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (Hons).

Joanne is admitted to practice in the High Court of Australia and the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
